List 30 Phrasal Verbs


A phrasal verb is a verb + a small word (a preposition or adverb) that together have a special meaning.

The meaning is often different from the original verb.

👉 Example:

• look – to direct your eyes in a certain direction

Example: She looked at the sky.

• look after – to take care of someone or something

Example: He looks after his little sister when their parents are at work.

• look up – to search for information in a book, dictionary, or online

Example: You can look up that word in the dictionary.


1. bring up – mencionar un tema

She brought up an interesting idea.

2. call off – cancelar

They called off the meeting.

3. carry on – continuar

Please, carry on with your story.

4. come across – encontrarse con algo por casualidad

I came across an old photo yesterday.

5. come up with – inventar, proponer (una idea)

He came up with a smart solution.

6.    find out – descubrir

I found out the truth.

7. get along (with) – llevarse bien

Do you get along with your classmates?

8. get back – regresar

When did you get back from London?

9. get over – recuperarse de algo

It took her months to get over the flu.

10. give up – rendirse, dejar de hacer algo

He gave up smoking last year.

11. go on – continuar, seguir

The show must go on.

12. grow up – crecer

I grew up in Bogotá.

13. hang out – pasar el rato

We love hanging out at the park.

14. hold on – esperar

Hold on a minute, please.

15. look after – cuidar

She looks after her younger brother.

16. look for – buscar

I’m looking for my keys.

17. look forward to – esperar con ansias

I look forward to the weekend.

18. look up – buscar información

You can look it up in the dictionary.

19. make up – inventar, reconciliarse

He made up a funny excuse.

20. pick up – recoger, aprender

Can you pick me up at the airport?

21. point out – señalar, destacar

She pointed out the mistake.

22. put off – posponer

We had to put off the trip.

23. put on – ponerse (ropa), encender

He put on his jacket.

24. run out of – quedarse sin

We ran out of milk.

25. set up – organizar, montar

They set up a new business.

26. show up – aparecer

He didn’t show up to class.

27. take off – despegar, quitarse (ropa)

The plane took off on time.

28. take over – hacerse cargo

She took over the family business.

29. turn down – rechazar, bajar el volumen

He turned down the job offer.

30. turn up – aparecer, subir el volumen

My phone turned up under the sofa.
